Destructions caused by the mudslides
URN: Nine people have so far been confirmed dead and scores injured after mudslides hit Kasika Trading Centre, Rukoki Sub County in Kasese district. The mudslides occurred at around 2: 30 am on Wednesday.
At least 20 houses and several hectares of crop gardens were also washed away. The residents and police are currently digging through the rubble to retrieve more bodies.
Kule Zakayo Maghuta one of the residents said that the rains began at around 1:00 am.
He says several families are still stranded after their houses and business premises were destroyed by the mudslides.
Geoffrey Blessious Masereka one of the residents involved in retrieving bodies says that they estimate more than ten people to have lost their lives. He says that efforts to retrieve more bodies or save lives are being hindered by the rudimentary tools they are using.
Sepriaon Muhindo a coffee dealer says the mudslides buried his store which had 10 bags of coffee estimated at 6 million shillings and destroyed a new motorcycle that he acquired on loan.
Christopher Sunday, another resident says that five bodies of juveniles and four others had so far been retrieved.
Biira Kigama, the District LCV Councilor Rukoki, and Mbungha Sub Counties said that several community roads have been cut off.
Eliphazi Muhindi, the LCV Chairperson Kasese says they are making an assessment of the situation.
Meanwhile, one person has been confirmed dead following flooding that has hit Tokwe Sub County in Bundibugyo District.
