At least 14 guns have been recovered from deserted LDUs in Kidepo sector, according to the police. Kidepo comprises the districts of Kotido, Kaabong, Karenga and Abim districts.

Another gun was recovered from a warrior in Lotome in Napak district taking the total number of guns recovered to 88 since the disarmament started on August 17. Police and the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces -UPDF are conducting voluntary and forceful disarmament in the sub-region located in the neighbourhood of the armed communities of Turkana in Kenta and Toposa in South Sudan’s Toposa.

The two pastoral communities have often collaborated with criminals from Karamoja to rearm after major disarmament in early 2001, culminating in insecurity, cattle raids.

Security teams in Karamoja say that a considerable number of LDUs from the subregion deserted the forces to engage in cattle rustling, joining a bigger group of rustlers across the region. But luck for some of them ran out as joint forces hunted them down in order to recover the guns.

Michael Longole, the police spokesperson for Mt. Moroto says this is the biggest recovery made from deserters and the joint forces are still looking for some of them who deserted. Intelligence information shows that some of the warriors have been in hiding to evade disarmament.

Meanwhile, two warriors were killed in different ambushes laid against cattle rustlers. The government has heightened security in the sub-region by deploying more troops and military hardware to curb cattle thefts and accomplish the forceful  disarmament, expected to end on 17 October.
