Heavy Rains Destroy houses In Kasese Town

Written by on August 12, 2021

More than 30 families in Railway Ward in Kasese Municipality are out in the cold following heavy rains that destroyed their houses and several acres of crop gardens.

The rain also killed a number of domestic animals. Characterized by strong winds and hailstorm, the rains started pounding the area around 4 PM on Wednesday and lasted for close to an hour.

The victims have appealed to the government and benevolent institutions for support.

Cecilia Biira, the railway ward councillor, says the affected families are now being housed by relatives and neighbours who survived the destruction.

She says the situation may worsen with the onset of heavy rains in the region.

Deo Kabagambe, one of the affected residents, says that a heavy tree fell on his house bringing part of it down. He was rescued by neighbours who quickly cut through the rubble to create a way for him to come out.

Andrew Baluku, another resident says that they are in the process of constructing a temporary structure because the rain blew off the rooftop of their house. Buluku says that they will need between Shillings 500, 000 and a million to restore the roof.

Aggrey Kapera, another victim says that the rains blew off the rooftop of his house and destroyed his banana and vanilla gardens. He says the poor drainage system is also exposing residents to more danger when it rains heavily, saying water runs into people’s houses.

The Kasese Municipality Mayor, Chance Kahindo says that his office will liaise with the district to support the affected households. Kahindo urged the people in the Municipality to plant more trees around their homes to serve as windbreakers to avoid such destruction in the future.

Kasese is currently drenched in rain that has left some minimal disruptions in Kamaiba, Kiteso, Kilembe quarters and Nyakasanga among other places in the municipality.
